Next Generation High-Efficiency, Earth-Abundant, Environmentally-Friendly Solar Cells

A likely path for future PV industry development is to substantially improve silicon cell efficiency through tandem-cell design where a higher-bandgap thin-film cell is stacked onto silicon. There is a clear need to develop low-cost, stable, high-efficiency cells for this role by using greener (earth-abundant, environmental-friendly) materials for sustainable deployment. With experience from our world record CZTS solar cells, we will explore new greener solar cell technologies. We recently surveyed the whole range of likely tetrahedrally coordinated semiconductors and identified the most promising of these, with these to be evaluated andexplored experimentally where feasibleto assess their potential.
