Promoting Resilient Outcomes for Children and Young People in State Care and Beyond

Back to search results

The study of resilience (positive adaptation during or following adversity or serious threats to development) represents an important area of inquiry for children and youth in out-of-home care. Across Australia an estimated 46,000 children are in state care. Children and young people who have been in care during their childhood are at high risk of experiencing social exclusion as adults. Poor educational attainment, physical, developmental and mental health concerns, homelessness and involvement in the criminal justice system are experienced by youth in out-of-home care deriving from their maltreatment history. They are less likely than other children in the general population to continue their education past 16 years, or undertake higher education, which implies exclusion from employment and careers that offer better wages and prospects. Such risks tend to be amplified for indigenous children in care. Aims of the project: 1) to investigate educational outcomes for young persons from a public care background, and identify factors within care, educational and other systems that facilitate or inhibit resilient outcomes 2) to explore young people's constructions of their learning and work identities in terms of their gender, race, ethnicity and care trajectories eliciting their perspectives and that of care providers.
