Risk Factors and Biomarkers of Alzheimer's Disease and Vascular Dementia

Back to search results

This work aims to identify novel risk and protective factors for dementia (in particular Alzheimer's disease and Vascular Dementia) and establish robust biomarkers using blood (including DNA), neuroimaging and brain tissue. The data and biomaterials are obtained from three longitudinal studies of brain ageing and dementia being conducted at CHeBA - the Sydney Memory and Ageing Study, Older Australian Twins Study and Sydney Centenarian Study - as well as three international consortia that are being led by Professor Sachdev - COSMIC (26 studies, N>70,000), STROKOG (27 studies, N>10,000) and International Centenarian Consortium for Dementia (14 studies, N.7000). The consortia provide exceptional power to examine risk factors and biomarkers in diverse settings and racial/ethnic groups, and cross-replicate findings. The work has the potential for international impact on the epidemiology of dementia.
