Trends in Causes of Death in Pacific Island Countries

Back to search results

Monitoring CVD, diabetes, etc. mortality requires accurate period trends in cause of death. The PhD involves a novel use of computerised coding and derivation of underlying cause from death certificates (DC), using IRIS software (now employed in Australia), to alter incorrect positioning of conditions on the death certificate (so common in LMIC), then to re-select the underlying cause of death. RT/SM have produced trial algorithms, and DC data from Pacific Island States are available. This work will produce more accurate trends in major underlying causes of death by correcting for certifier error in past data, while prospectively addressing certification practices.
