Uncovering the role of zinc in dry eye disease

Zinc is an essential trace mineral abundant in the eye, and zinc finger protein expression has been associated with severe dry eye. Zinc is important in gene transcription and is involved in Vitamin A regulation, a process essential to ocular surface integrity. Zinc has many biological roles including antioxidant, immune function, cell and membrane structure and cell signalling, all of which could be linked with pathogenicity of dry eye. Unravelling the role of zinc in dry eye through genetic and cell based models could lead to pharmacological targets to treat this condition and other ocular surface disorders.

A successful HDR student would have training in molecular cell biology and genetics. A knowledge of programming and statistical computing would be an advantage.
