Integrated system for 3D optimisation of construction site layout planning

Construction site layout planning is a complex problem and greatly affects project cost, construction safety, and overall productivity. Frequent changes and dynamic work environments on construction sites impose a need to develop an automated approach to capture the 3D site layout. This project exploits the recent technological advancement on using laser scanning and 3D-photogrammetry to extract data in a form of point cloud, and aims to streamline the site planning process by developing interactive 3D geometrical models. Space optimisation mechanism and rule-based criteria are integrated with the 3D models to provide an efficient and cost-effective approach for construction site planning.

The ideal candidate for this project would have a degree in construction management / architecture / engineering / computer science and with relevant experience on programming, 3D modelling and developing optimisation mechanism. Additional skills and experience on developing algorithm of computational geometry, knowledge on geo-space standard, BIM, IFC, GIS standard, CityGML, are desirable. The candidate should also satisfy the usual entry requirement of PhD degree at UNSW.
