Molecular Genetics of Inherited Heart Disease

This project is focussed on two important causes of heart failure, dilated cardiomyopathy and atrial fibrillation. We will use cutting-edge whole-genome sequencing technologies to discover the genetic underpinnings of disease in families with these disorders, and to study individual profiles of genetic risk for disease complications, co-morbidities and pharmacogenomic choices. We will also use genetically-engineered zebrafish models to study the effects of genetic variants on heart structure and function and to evaluate gene-environment interactions and new drug therapies. Insights gained from these studies will help to provide personalised medicine for families.
