This project will determine the therapeutic efficacy of targeting two important intracellular pathways for the treatment of obesity and diabetes. The first approach aims to promote the synthesis of a key metabolite (NAD) to boost cellular fuel metabolism, while the second approach aims to limit the accumulation of deleterious cellular lipids by targeting a specific family of enzymes. Novel drug candidates developed at UNSW will be employed, along with cutting-edge pre-clinical models and techniques (e.g. mass spectrometry). There is high potential for this research to have a major impact on the growing obesity and diabetes epidemics.
